Seventh inning dashes Griffins' hopes of win
Fontbonne rattled off 11 hits including a double and two triples as they led 5-2 headed into the bottom of the seventh inning before falling to No. 15-ranked St. Kate's 6-5. Diamond Thomas recorded three RBI's in the contest.
Clermont, Fla. - Fontbonne University softball suffered a heart breaker in their first game over spring break. The Griffins led No. 15-ranked St. Kate's 5-2 headed into the bottom of the seventh before the Wildcats won on a walkoff double after scoring two runs on a single the batter before. Fontbonne then fell to St. Olaf 6-2 and are 0-4 on the year.
The Griffins didn't have any issues at the plate as they totaled 11 hits including a double and triple by catcher Emelia Modglin and another triple by Diamond Thomas. Second baseman Alleigh Kruse went three-for-three at the plate and also walked.
Sophomore Maddy Strickland suffered the loss while striking out three Wildcats.
St. Kate's delivered two back-to-back hits in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Those two hits garnered the Wildcats' three runs to win the game on a walkoff double, crushing Fontbonne's would-be first win of the season.
Fontbonne returns to action Tuesday in Florida when they take on Calvin College (9am) and Tufts (11:30am). All games are broadcasted by Collegecasts.com.
