St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne University softball dominated MacMurray College in game one and came from behind to sweep the Highlanders in the home-opening doubleheader Friday night.
The Griffins scored eight runs in the second inning of their first contest at ABC Ball Park this year on their was to a 12-1 five-inning victory. Sophomore Maddy Strickland earned the win in the circle as she struck out two Highlanders. Diamond Thomas recorded the only double play of the game on a line drive between first base and a MacMurray base-runner as she recorded the first and second outs of the second inning.
In the second game, Fontbonne took a 3-1 lead with Thomas in the circle. Thomas got out of a struggling fourth inning and was replaced by freshman Brianna Durant who allowed three runs to cross the plate. Strickland came in to relieve the Griffins and earned her second win of the day after pitching 2.2 innings.
The Griffins trailed 4-3 headed into the bottom of the seventh when Haley Stewart got into some trouble in the circle for MacMurray. Stewart walked Emily McNiff who then stole second and took third on a wild pitch. Maddie Cooksey also walked and then stole second. McNiff tied the game when Courtney Kedroski singled through the left side. Emelia Modglin was then hit to load the bases. Fontbonne avoided a conference loss when designated player Sam Brown hit a blooper almost to the same spot as Kedroski for the walk-off single.
Fontbonne travels to Blackburn Saturday for a doubleheader which begins at 1 p.m.
