Softball combines for twenty-six runs over Principia
The Griffins defeated Principia 18-0 in five innings and 8-1. Fontbonne is now 11-11 on the year and lead the SLIAC with a 9-1 conference record.
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne softball swept Principia College today by a combined score of 26-1. Diamond Thomas earned the shutout in the circle for game one's 18-0 five-inning blowout while Brianna Durant pitched all seven innings for her third victory of the year as Fontbonne downed the Panthers 8-1.
The Griffins are 11-11 overall and lead the conference with a 9-1 SLIAC record. Today's doubleheader was the final regular season game at home for the Griffins who are 7-1 on their home field. Fontbonne hopes to return to competition at ABC Ball Park when they host the 2017 SLIAC Tournament.
Game One
Thomas struck out three over five innings to earn her second win of the year. The Griffins scored four runs in the second inning on five hits. Second baseman Isabel Hotop singled on would-be sacrifice bunts twice when noone was covering first or second base for the Panthers.
Fontbonne then drew up crooked numbers in the third inning (eight) and fourth inning (six) to end the game early. In the third inning, Fontbonne hit six singles, a double by Beth Fields and a triple by Maddie Cooksey. The Griffins' fourth-inning runs came from five hits which included a double by Melanie Russo, her first hit of the season, after returning from injury.
Game Two
Durant owes some thanks to freshman Beth Fields who got her workout in at third base during the first three innings of the second contest. Principia grounded out in everyone's first at-bat except for Lauren Daugherty who was in the dead middle of the lineup. She grounded out the shortstop. So Fields assisted four consecutive putouts to first baseman Sam Brown, took a small break and let Kedroski complete a fielding and then tallied four more consecutive assists.
Durant then retired the Panthers' 10th grounder in the fourth inning before Principia earned their first of two hits on the day. She finished the game with three strikeouts.
Catcher Emelia Modglin solo homered to center field to give Fontbonne a 1-0 lead before Hannah Hathaway doubled to score Leann Schaefer to tie the game. It would be the only run of the day for the Panthers.
Fontbonne exploded offensively in the fourth inning by scoring six runs on four hits and a walk. The Griffins tallied their final run in the fifth after Alyssa Pisarek doubled and Emily McNiff sent her home on a deep single to short.
Modglin went three-for-three in game two with three RBI and two runs scored. Aleigha Russell failed to strikeout any Griffins at the plate.
Fontbonne has a busy week coming up, with eight road games. Luckily the Griffins don't have too far to travel. Fontbonne plays at WashU Tuesday followed by Webster Wednesday, Greenville on Friday and ends the week on a much farther trip to Eureka on Saturday, April 22nd.
