Track and Field runners break school and personal records
St. Louis- The Fontbonne men and women's track and field teams put together excellent performances at this past weekend's Fighting Scots Invitational in Monmouth, Illinois. The 15 team meet featured strong competition from some of the top Division III schools in the Midwest.
Leading the Griffins was Alyssa Tonner (Trinity Catholic, St. Louis, MO), whose outstanding mark of 10:57.07 broke her own school record in the 3000m run. This marks the third meet in a row in which Tonner has run to a record.
Says Coach Shaver, "Alyssa continues to impress in each and every race she runs. She is one of the most diligent athletes I have ever seen; her performances are a reflection of the work she's been putting in over the last three years. She gets stronger every week. We look forward to every opportunity to get her on the track and see what she can do."
Joining Tonner in the 3000m run were freshman Claire Becker (O'Hara, Kansas City, MO) and sophomore Justin Horneker (St. Mary's, St. Louis, MO), who also posted a PR at the distance. Freshman Sam Lay (Milford School, CT) came away from the meet with a pair of personal records in what has become his signature event, the 400m.
"I'm really happy for Sam, he's been looking for his niche and I think he's found it. He's brand new to the sport but is making huge improvements and has quickly proven himself on the track."
Griffins mid-distance runners joined in the record setting, with Jessica Brock (Long Beach Poly, CA) and Cristian Sellars (Southwest HS, Washburn, MO) posting a pair of season's best performances in the 800 meters.
The Griffins are back on the track tomorrow at the Illinois College Alumni Invitational in Jacksonville, Illinois.
