Firsts and Comebacks Highlight Greenville Select Meet for Griffins Track
Greenville, Ill. – Four Griffin performances stood out in the third week of the outdoor season at the Greenville Select Meet.
In the 1500m run, Justin Horneker ran 4:12.06, taking the lead with 600m to go and closing strong to win his section. Horneker, who is coming off of a winter foot injury, was less than one second off his personal best in his second race back. He doubled back later in the day to win his section of the 800m in a collegiate personal best. Cristian Sellars also made strong return to form in his first race back since January. Sellars was also less than one second off of his personal best and won his heat of the 1500m run with a strong finishing kick.
Freshman Becca Buehler became the first Griffin to ever run the 400m hurdles, finishing in a time of 70.25. Two weeks ago Buehler opened up the outdoor season with two big personal bests, running 62.42 in the 400m and 27.87 in the 200m. Each performance was over a full second better than her previous best.
Newcomer Gunter DeZurik threw the shot put 9.42m, his first time throwing in over four years. "Gunter is strong and he's quick," said Coach Blake, "but he's never formally learned how to throw which means there is a lot room to grow. He loves to compete which is what we are looking for."
"Our program is young. As athletes and as coaches we enjoy the 'firsts' and the opportunity to establishing a legacy to build upon going forward," said Coach Blake.
