Track debuts 2015 outdoor season at Washington U. Mini Meet
St. Louis, Mo. - The Griffins kicked off the outdoor track season on Friday at the Washington University Mini Meet.
In the women's 1500-meter run, Claire Becker ran 5:32.34, a good run for the steeplechaser and the first 1500m of her career. After a fast first lap, Annie McKenzie hung on to run 5:37.00 in the same race, a ten second equivalent improvement from her mile time set in indoors. McKenzie's run earned the sophomore Griffin athlete-of-the-meet honors. With a strong kick at the end, freshmen Cathy Maschmeyer ran 5:53.05.
In the men's 1500-meter run, Justin Horneker fell off a fast early pace to run 4:21.44. In a separate heat but in a similar fashion, Cristian Sellars ran 4:33.47.
In the women's power events, Becca Buehler placed 2nd in the 400-meter dash in a time of 61.78 seconds. Buehler doubled back an hour later to run 27.84 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Gabi Cruts ran 13.32 seconds in the 100-meter run, and doubled back to run a 29-flat 200m race. Taylor McGowen ran 30.45 seconds in the 200, her fastest time thus far. In the women's shot put Kelly Mundwiller's farthest throw of the day was 8.80 meters.
Next weekend the team will stay close to home again as they compete at the Washington University Invitational on Friday and Saturday, March 27th and 28th.
