Griffins Post Solid Performances at Wash. U. Invite
St. Louis, Mo. – The Griffin track team competed at the Washington University Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
At Friday's Distance Carnival, freshmen Cathy Maschmeyer ran her first 5,000-meter run on the track in 21:55. Justin Horneker picked up a two second personal best in the men's 5,000, running 16:14.00. In the women's 10,000-meter run, Olivia Beggs finished her first attempt at the 25 lap race despite struggling with stomach issues for the greater part of the race.
On Saturday, Cristian Sellars kicked off competition for the Griffins with a six second improvement from the previous weekend in the 1500-meter run, posting a time of 4:27.17. Meanwhile, Kelly Mundwiller had a great day in the women's shot put, where all three of her throws surpassed her previous personal best. Her furthest and final throw of the day was 9.44 meters. In the women's 100-meter dash, Gabi Cruts finished 12th out of 27 in a time of 13.54 seconds. She followed up later in the day with a big seasonal best in the 200-meter dash of 28.53 seconds. Two-sport athlete Dallas Haywood made his track season debut in the 100-meter dash. Sprinter Clayton Bond ran the first 400-meter dash of his track career in 55.86 seconds. It was a solid performance for the freshmen who had to take two weeks off during February due to injury. Bond earned Griffin athlete-of-the-meet honors.
In the women's 400-meter hurdles, Becca Buehler busted off the hurdling rust in a time of 68.38 seconds. Annie McKenzie had a two second personal best in the 800-meter run, running 2:48.27. Last but not least, Claire Becker ran her first 3,000-meter steeplechase of the season in a personal best of 12:57.19.
Next weekend the team heads to the Greenville College Select Meet on Saturday, April 4th.
