Track and Field performs historic marks at SLIAC Invitational
Greenville, Ill. - Fontbonne University track and field had an extremely productive and record-setting day at the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Invitational on Saturday. Both teams placed fourth, the highest in the history of the programs.
Fontbonne set 16 new school records and plenty of personal records on the day. The SLIAC 4x400m men's race was enhanced with Fontbonne, Westminster and Spalding in a tight race as the thunder rolled in the background to add to the excitement as the Griffins secured a new school record. The men's sprints took home the most points for the Griffins while the throws was the most successful on the women's side.
Kelly Mundwiller and Tyler Williams were crowned SLIAC Champs in javelin and the 100m dash respectively. Gabi Cruts set a new personal record, breaking her high school time in the 100m dash for second place while Lynsey Wehrenberg placed third in her first competition in the javelin.
Junior Jennie Stare found herself on the raw end of a 400m hurdle event. The first heat of the women's 400m hurdles didn't have enough hurdles on the track, forcing the three competitors to re-race later. Stare had to re-run the event after running an exhausting 3000m steeplechase.
Next up at the North Central Last Chance meet, some Griffins will be competing that have hit certain national levels. Expected to perform in North Central, Ill. Thursday and Friday are Kelly Mundwiller (Shot Put, Hammer, Javelin), Jennie Stare (3000m Steeplechase), Brianna Burnett (Sprints), Tyler Williams (Sprints), Craig Niethe (hurdles), Gabi Cruts (sprints), Chris Graham (hammer), Quinn Wilson (Triple Jump). Final determinations will be made Tuesday evening.
