Five new indoor records broken at inaugural meet
Columbia, Mo. – Fontbonne University track and field kicked off the 2017 indoor season at the Missouri Invitational last Friday at The University of Missouri.
Both the freshman and school records for the shot put and the weight throw were broken by three different athletes (Raven Venegas, Sydney Dye and Mackenze Daniel) in their first collegiate competition. Venegas now holds both the school and freshman records in the shot put at 10.49 meters and the weight throw at 12.07 meters.
Junior Brian Nguyen broke the school record in the 60-meter dash running a time of 7.70 seconds. Nguyen also came very close to taking down the school record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.82 seconds.
Many other freshmen student-athletes made their college debuts. Katie Gosser competed in the 60-meter dash as well as the 4x400 meter relay. Colleen Gosser competed in the 800-meter dash as well as the 4x400 meter relay. Sarah Rhoads made her debut with the 3000-meter run and Austin Lawrence competed solely in the one mile run.
Upperclassmen kicked-off the year in a variety of events. Senior Jennie Stare competed in the 800-meter dash as well as the 4x400 meter relay. Sophomore Jaylah Jones saw a lot of the track that day as she competed in the 60-meter dash, 200-meter dash and the 4x400 meter relay. Quinn Wilson was the lone jumper competing in long jump.
Head coach Chris Buckler had this to say about the meet, "I felt it was a great learning experience for our first meet and I am excited to see how we work to get better over the next couple weeks."
The track and field team will travel to the University of Indianapolis in Indianapolis, Ind. on Friday, Jan. 27th for their next meet.
