Track and Field with good showing at MSJ Invitational, leading up to SLIAC Championship
Raven Venegas won the discus, hammer and shot put events while breaking her own hammer record. Austin Lawrence led the men's team with a third place finish in the javelin.
Cincinnati, Ohio - Fontbonne University track and field made some impressive marks Saturday at the Mount St. Joseph University Invitational, winning three events on the women's side and setting five new records.
The Griffins had one of the best weekend in school history. The women's squad scored 115 points finishing in second place out of six teams, and one of three with over 100 points. Thomas More College won the women's meet outscoring the Griffins by 33 points. Fontbonne's performances came from all event areas. Individually, the team was led by freshman Raven Venegas who won three titles (shot put, discus, and hammer) and was a member of the 4x100 relay team that broke the school freshman record. Venegas also crushed her own hammer throw record by almost two meters.
The men finished sixth, holding off Asbury University by five points. The highlight for the men's squad included Austin Lawrence hitting another PR in the javelin with a toss of 36.80 meters, finishing in third. Lawrence also threw a PR in the discus throw and set the freshman record in the shot put. Stephen Lendy, in his first action of the year, scored in both the high jump and javelin.
Both teams will travel to Greenville College this Friday and Saturday for the SLIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. It will be a completely different lineup for the Griffins entering the tournament who only have 10 points returning on the women's side and none on the men's side from last year's meet.
