Nicole Joerger's double-double leads Griffins to 1st SLIAC win
St. Louis- Fontbonne women's basketball grabs their first St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) win of the season. Fontbonne defeated the Blackburn College Beavers 54-46. Blackburn is 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the SLIAC. The Griffins are 2-1 overall and 1-0 in SLIAC play.
Blackburn's 1st half shooting struggles allowed Fontbonne to end the half on top by the wide margin of 22 points (38-7). The Beavers shot just 6% from the field, and 30% from the free throw line. The Griffins shot 50% from the line, 33% behind the arc, and 43% from the field.
Fontbonne gained from the Beavers' 1st half struggles. During the 2nd half, the Griffins froze at the line, shooting only 8% while the Beavers came out of the locker room ready to go. Shelby Smith led the Beaver offense, scoring 19 points alone in the 2nd half. Blackburn out-rebounded and out-scored the Griffins during their 2nd half comeback try.
Fontbonne freshman Nicole Joerger posted a double-double leading her team to victory tonight. Joerger collected 16 points and 10 rebounds on the night and also recorded 2 assists and 2 steals. Senior Allison Hogan scored for a total of 14 points and was 3-4 from the line.
For Blackburn, Smith also ended the night with 7 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 steals. Briana Rae was the only other Beaver to score in double digits (10).
