Griffins fall to No. 5 Bears
St. Louis- The Fontbonne University Griffins' women's basketball team fell last night to the No. 5 ranked Washington University Bears 49-81. The Griffins fall to 2-4 on the season, meanwhile the Bears climb to 7-1.
Fontbonne led against the Bears during the first 6 minutes of play (8-7). Senior Allison Hogan committed 3 fouls in the first 5 minutes of play, hampering the Griffin offense. Washington U then ignited their fuel, leading 25-43 at the half. Starting the 2nd half, the Bears went on a 9-0 run, deepening the wound for the Griffins.
Junior Ava Johnson's 11 of 13 points came in the 1st half. Johnson also went 4-4 from the free throw line. Freshman Samantha Voegtle scored 9 of her 15 points in the 2nd half, also pulling in 6 rebounds for the Griffins.
Overall, the Bears out-rebounded the Griffins 56-39. Fontbonne shot 32% from the floor while Washington U shot 36% from the field. From the line, the Griffins improved from their last game, shooting 54%, but the Bears shot a history making 100% (14-14).
Fontbonne is hosting the Tri-Conference Tournament this weekend between Millikin University and Illinois College. Millikin vs Fontbonne is set for Friday night at 7pm. Millikin vs Illinois College is set for 7pm on Saturday and Fontbonne vs Illinois College is slated for 1pm Sunday.
