St. Louis- Fontbonne University women's basketball committed 28 turnovers, causing a 53-83 loss to Wydown rival Washington University tonight.
The No. 2 Washington University Bears connected with 35 points from those turnovers and 12 points on fast breaks. The Bears managed a 41 point lead with 3:51 to go in the game.
Fontbonne freshman Olivia Hollander was the only Griffin to score in double digits, edging out with 10 points off the bench in 15 minutes of play. Hollander drained four of five attempts in the field and was 2-2 at the line.
Junior Chelsey Freymuth scored eight points and brought in five rebounds for the Griffins. Sophomore guard Erika Kuhn went 2-3 from three-point range and freshman Emily Haring scored on her only attempt from the arc. Sophomore shooter Nicole Joerger struggled, sinking only one basket of her six attempts from three-point range.
Washington U.'s junior Alyssa Johanson scored the game-high 18 points with senior Lucy Montgomery totaling 13 on the evening. Both players came off the bench for the Bears. Starting junior Melissa Gilkey was the final Bear recording double-digit points (10).
Overall the Bears out-rebounded the Griffins 37-34 and stole the ball 17 times.
Fontbonne travels to Elmhurst this Saturday for a 2pm tipoff and plays at North Park Sunday at noon.
