St. Louis- The Fontbonne University women's basketball team were swept this weekend by Elmhurst College Saturday 89-48 and North Park University Sunday 91-45. The Griffins fall to 3-5 on the season.
Elmhurst dominated the first half, outscoring Fontbonne 35-18. Fontbonne finally got to double digits after a Lauren Willis layup with 8:15 to go before the half, with the Griffins trailing 18-11. The Bluejays went into the locker room hot, after a 17-7 run.
Chelsey Freymuth's initial second-half layup was counteracted by Elmhurst's 10 unanswered points for a 45-20 lead with 7:05 remaining in the game. Later the Bluejays would score 11 points in a row, upending Fontbonne's chances of a comeback.
Erika Kuhn scored 11 points for Fontbonne and Freymuth compiled 10. Lauren Willis narrowly missed double digits finishing the day with 9 points. Bluejay Mel Schwedtmann was unstoppable with 27 points.
The Griffins continued to struggle against North Park. North Park jumped out to a 20-3 at the 11:15 minute mark. After Alaina Bisch scored her second layup of the game, and scoring Fontbonne's fifth point, the Vikings would score 10 more consecutive points (30-5). North Park led 43-23 at halftime. The Vikings would outscore Fontbonne in the second half 48-22.
Against North Park, Freymuth almost pulled off a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Brittany Pittas scored 13 points for the Vikings for the game-high.
