Despite Hollander's double-double and Joerger's 13 pts, Griffins Fall to Spalding
St. Louis- This season, the Griffins fell in a nail-biter against the Spalding University Golden Eagles on Saturday, 61-56. Fontbonne has slipped to 3-7 on the season and 1-2 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
With 16 minutes left in the game, Spalding held their highest 8-point margin over Fontbonne. The Griffins rallied back with a 12-0 run for a 46-42 lead, snapped by 5-0 Golden Eagle run. Spalding led 47-46 with 10 minutes to go. The Griffins held their final lead of 52-51 with 5:17 remaining in the game.
Olivia Hollander scored 10 points and 9 rebounds in nine minutes of action during the first half as the Griffins trailed 35-30. Hollander ended the game with the Griffins' only double-double of the day with 10 points and 12 rebounds. This was the third time this season Hollander scored her season-high 10 points.
Fontbonne's high scorer on the afternoon was sophomore Nicole Joerger. Joerger was a perfect 3-3 from three-point range in the second half, netting a total 13 points. Junior Chelsey Freymuth scored nine and rebounded 8 basketballs during the Griffin loss.
Kerstin Hayes accumulated 15 points for Spalding. Kallie Ash scored 12 points in the first half before finishing with a total 14 points. Dee Dee Sliter was on Ash's heels, totaling 13 points. Ash and Sliter both recorded season-high points.
The Griffins' game at Iowa Wesleyan scheduled for Tuesday, January 7th has been postponed due to inclement weather and road conditions. No reschedule date has been determined. The Griffins are set to host Greenville this Thursday, January 9th at 6pm.
