Freymuth Leads Griffins Past Greenville
St. Louis- The Griffins ended their six-game losing streak tonight with a big win over conference foe Greenville. Fontbonne is now 4-7 overall and evens their SLIAC record at 2-2. Greenville falls to 1-2 in conference play.
Fontbonne pressured Greenville early, forcing turnovers to go up 8-3 at 15:40. Finding the open man let Greenville tie the game at 12, eventually taking an 18-12 lead. 21-14 was the largest lead for the Panthers. Greenville held the lead until 3:54 when Joerger's jumper gave Fontbonne the upper hand 34-32. It was looking like the Griffins would take a 42-37 lead heading into the locker room until Lauren Willis' desperation shot at the buzzer sank through the net. Willis was at the volleyball ten foot mark near the Greenville bench, approximately 10 foot behind the three-point line.
With 18:18 to go in the second half and Fontbonne up 49-42, the Griffins scored seven unanswered points in the ensuing three minutes for a 13-point advantage over the Panthers. With Fontbonne up by ten with 10:19 to go, Greenville came back to within three points trailing 63-66 just two and half minutes later. Greenville chipped away, pulling to within one point of the Griffins twice before Fontbonne pulled away with the 86-74 win.
Freymuth's 23 points were her season-high. She also reeled in six rebounds and a steal, shooting 10-13 from the field. Olivia Hollander picked up 14 points in about 14 minutes of play off the bench connecting six of eight attempts from the field. Close behind her was Willis totaling 13 points and Emily Haring with 10 on the night. Haring also contributed with five assists.
Greenville's Emily Gundy was a close second on the night, scoring 22 points. Miranda Murray and Missy Deal each totaled 19 points off the bench as they tried to give the Panthers the lead.
