Joerger Nets Career-High 25 Points
St. Louis- The Griffins fell to Spalding University 61-65 in Saturday's St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) matchup in St. Louis, dropping their SLIAC record to 2-5. Spalding sits at 6-1 in the conference.
Sophomore Nicole Joerger found her rhythym, scoring 25 points including five three-pointers to enhance both her career-high single-game made three-point field goals and points records. Jerger's five treys came on ten attempts.
First half scoring was relatively back and forth, with the largest lead being only a margin of six for Spalding. Teams were tied at 26 heading into the locker room.
Spalding managed a 12-point lead with 10:27 to go. A Joerger jump shot with five minutes remaining cut the deficit to five points, but Spalding ran a 7-0 run in the ensuing two minutes for a 63-51 advantage. Fontbonne responded with eight unanswered points, to trail by just four with 1:22 left in the game. Missed scoring chances by both teams for the next minute would keep the score relatively the same. The Griffins failed to capitalize on Spalding's nine additional turnovers. The Golden Eagles out-rebounded Fontbonne 45-29.
Chelsey Freymuth returned from an injury with 12 points for the Griffins.
Jessica Guy scored the only double-double of the game (her fifth in a row) with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Kallie Ash scored 14 points for Spalding for their game-high.
Traveling to MacMurray for a 6pm matchup on Wednesday, the Griffins return home on Saturday for a 1pm contest against Iowa Wesleyan.
