Tough 75-73 Loss for Women's Basketball
St. Louis-Women's basketball allowed Iowa Wesleyan to come from behind and win 75-73.
The Tigers came out in a full-court press and Fontbonne took their time finding gaps making sure to cross half court before their 10 seconds were up. Back and forth scoring for most of the first half until Fontbonne scored eight points in a row to take a 33-25 lead with three and a half minutes before halftime. The Griffins went into the locker room leading 37-34.
Again buckets were shared until the Griffins found themselves up by ten with 7:15 remaining. Iow Wesleyan then went on an 10-2 run, cutting their deficit down to two with five minutes to go. A Nicole Joerger three-pointer followed by six Tiger points gave Iowa Wesleyan the 69-68 advantage at the 2:12 mark. DeAmbra Pilkinton found the basket to give Fontbonne their final lead of the game (70-69). Six more unanswered Tiger points gave them a 75-70 lead up until a last second Joerger three-pointer found its way into the basket.
Four Griffin starters scored in double-digits this afternoon. The fifth, Emily Haring, was the glue on the court as she scored nine points on two treys, grabbed five defensive rebounds, had two steals and four assists. Haring remained calm and collective near shot clock extinction, dishing the assist each time the Griffins were almost out of time.
Senior Chelsey Freymuth scored big on the afternoon, totaling 21 points, on 10 of 13 attempts, her second highest of the season. Joerger finished the afternoon with four three's for a total of 16 points and contributed on 7 assists. Olivia Hollander finished the day with 11 points and Pilkinton with ten. Pilkinton also recorded four assists and three steals by the end of the game.
Too many Griffin fouls allowed Iowa Wesleyan to put 13 free points on the board. Top scorer Karla Vietinghoff didn't see any play time for the Tigers this afternoon. Runner up Stephanie Russak, alongside Whitney Godden, each nailed four treys on eight attempts, scoring 16 and 14 points respectively. Dakota Flesner finished with 14 points as well and Kara Carter grabbed eight rebounds to go along with her 13 points.
The Griffins travel to Principia for a 6pm matchup Tuesday. Fontbonne is at home against Eureka next Saturday, February 1st at 1pm.
