Women's Basketball Improves with 65-56 Win Over Principia
St. Louis- The Griffins rebound after their two-point loss to Iowa Wesleyan with a 65-56 win against Principia College on Tuesday night. Holding a 45-7 lifetime record over the Panthers, this is Fontbonne's ninth straight win against the SLIAC opponent.
Both teams got out to a relatively even start and Principia saw their only lead of the game after Becca DeNicholas' three-pointer (9-6). The Griffins decided 23-4 run over the Panthers would help in their quest for another victory. Fontbonne now up 29-13 with just under four minutes left in the half, would head into the locker room with a 37-25 halftime score.
During that first half, DeNicholas would score 12 of her game-high 16 points. Principia was able to cut the Griffin-lead to five (51-46) with 11 minutes to go. Six unanswered points would give Fontbonne another double-digit lead just seconds later. Principia would try for a comeback but the Griffins wouldn't let the margin over seven points.
Senior Chelsey Freymuth ended with the Griffin-high 13 points. Freymuth only played 18 minutes before fouling out. Kristin Dempsey scored 12 points off the bench shooting four for six on the night with five rebounds and a block. As a team Fontbonne was 14 for 15 from the line, but only managed to score three three-pointers on 18 attempts.
Fontbonne hosts a Eureka team with a 9-1 SLIAC record this Saturday, February 1st at 1pm.
