Griffins Run Out of Clock Against Red Devils
St. Louis- After a week of postponed games, women's basketball got off to a very slow start tonight.The Griffins fell to Eureka College 61-65.
After a Chelsey Freymuth jump shot gave Fontbonne an 8-7 lead, Eureka capitalized on several Fontbonne hurried layups, scoring nine unanswered points for a 15-7 advantage. A little later on after another Freymuth bucket, the Griffins pulled within two, but the Red Devils scored six in a row for a 23-15 lead. Fontbonne cut Eureka's lead to one point but again the visiting team went on a scoring rant, scoring eight straight before Fontbonne finished the half with two buckets in the final 26 seconds of the half. Eureka led 33-28 at halftime.
A back and forth beginning to the second half kept the game at pace until Eureka pulled away to hold a 12-point lead. Down by nine with 6:31 remaining, Fontbonne scored six straight free throws, now down by three with 4:34 to go. Back and forth buckets would be exchanged before time ran out for the Griffins.
For the Griffins, Freymuth scored 15 points on the evening connecting on six of nine attempts with eight rebounds. Chelsy Gibson came off the bench to add 12 points for Fontbonne.
Kelsey Shoemake scored 16 of her game-high 24 points in the first half. Shoemake also reeled in 12 rebounds. Caty Eeten finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Eureka was just 1 for 17 from the arc.
Fontbonne outshot Eureka in the field and from long range. The Red Devils out-rebounded Fontbonne 48-37.
The Griffins return to host Westminster College this Saturday, February 8th at 1pm.
