Chelsy Gibson named SLIAC Player of the Week
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne University sophomore forward Chelsy Gibson (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) is this week's St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) women's basketball player of the week. Gibson led the Griffins to a 1-1 record last week recording 51 points and 23 rebounds while shooting 65.6% from the field. Gibson's 25.5 points per game is the best in the SLIAC while her field goal percentage puts her second and her 11.5 rebounds per game is third best.
Gibson led the Griffins to their first victory of the season, defeating Saint Mary of the Woods College (SMWC) 98-87. During the game, Gibson scored 34 points on 14 field goals while bringing down 15 rebounds. The double-double was the first of her career while shooting 66.7% and going 1-1 from three-point range. Gibson tied Fontbonne's single-game made field goals record and is now fourth among past Griffins in points scored in a single game.
Earlier in the week, Gibson played a big role in Fontbonne's almost comeback against Illinois College. The Griffins fell 70-73 after trailing 58-70. Gibson scored 17 points in that game with 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist while shooting 63.6% from the field.
Gibson was on point at the free throw line as well, scoring eight of 11 attempts on the week.
Fontbonne hosts Knox College this Saturday, November 29th in their 2014-15 home opener at 3pm.
*As a team, the Griffins made 38 field goals against SMWC, tieing the school record for most made field goals in a game.
