Last second bucket not enough as Griffins lose by one
St. Louis, Mo. - Sophomore guard Emmie Haring dribbled under the right side of the basket to the left, sinking a layup with 12 seconds remaining in the game. The bucket gave the Griffins a 54-53 lead over Iowa Wesleyan College (IWC). But IWC's Rachel Williams answered with her own left-side layup to win the game with just four seconds to go. The Griffins fell 55-54 and are now 3-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play. Iowa Wesleyan remains unbeaten at 3-0 in conference.
After a scoreless four minutes to open the game, Fontbonne led 10-8 with 13 minutes to go in the half when IWC connected on five three-pointers in four minutes to lead 31-14. Fontbonne clawed back, down 25-35 at halftime.
Second-half buckets were exchanged back and forth with Fontbonne until their final bucket from Haring.
In the first half, IWC's Karla Vietinghoff drained four of eight attempts from long range and scored 17 points. She was held scoreless in the second half by the Griffins.
At the free throw line, the Griffins combined for 18 of 24 attempts, totaling 75% accuracy. Fontbonne out-rebounded IWC 44-29 but were just two of 12 from beyond the arc. Haring finished with eight points, seven rebounds and five assists. Chelsy Gibson, Olivia Hollander and Lauren Willis each scored 10 points. Gibson finished with eight rebounds and Hollander six. Erika Kuhn was 7-8 in free throws. Senior Kristin Dempsey pulled down four offensive rebounds before finished with seven on the afternoon.
Fontbonne travels down the road on Thursday, December 18th for a 7:00 pm Wydown Showdown against No. 5-ranked Washington University.
