Washington U. hands Fontbonne their fourth straight loss
St. Louis, Mo. - No. 5- ranked Washington University dominated the court last night, handing Fontbonne University women's basketball their fourth straight loss in an 88-35 game. The undefeated Bears sent the Griffins' record to 3-5 overall.
Fontbonne committed 34 turnovers and 23 turnovers against the tall squad. Down 21-11, Fontbonne allowed Washington U. to score 12 straight points, and found themselves down 40-18 at halftime.
After trailing 64-26 with 10:56 left in the game, Coach Sias sent all the freshmen on the court. Washington U. would go on a 24-9 run to close out the win.
Melissa Gilkey scored 34 points and brought down 12 rebounds for the Bears.
For Fontbonne, Erika Kuhn scored seven points with six rebounds while Olivia Hollander also scored seven points and brought in four rebounds. Kuhn went 3-4 in the field. Freshman Taylor Ventimiglia scored five points while sophomore Chelsy Gibson rallied for four steals against the Bears. The Griffins got into foul trouble early, totaling 14 fouls in the first half.
The Griffins travel to Nashville, Tenn. over the holidays to play in the D3 Music City Classic at Trebecca Nazarene University. Fontbonne will take on Anderson University on Monday, December 29th and Maine Maritime on Tuesday, December 30th. The Griffins are back on home on Saturday, January 3rd to take on Blackburn College at 1pm.
