Griffins 2-0 in Music City Classic after Maine Maritime win
Nashville, Tenn. - Fontbonne University women's basketball finished with a sweep in Nashville after defeating Maine Maritime 55-45 in the Music City Classic hosted by Trevecca Nazarene University. Fontbonne is now .500 with a 5-5 overall record. The day before Fontbonne defeated Anderson University 63-47.
The Griffins began their final game in the Music City with an 11-0 start against the Maine Maritime Mariners before the Mariners pulled within three points with 11:41 to play before halftime. The Mariners led 22-21 with 2:22 to go before the Griffins closed out the half on an eight-point run to lead 29-22.
The Mariners held onto a one-point lead for a short time in the second half after a three-pointer. Fontbonne's Olivia Hollander answered with a jumper for a 38-37 Griffin lead. After a Mariner bucket, Fontbonne scored eight straight points for a 51-39 lead with 2:25 remaining to hold on for the win.
Hollander finished the game with 13 points, seven rebounds and one block. Lauren Willis secured the game-high 14 points while adding four rebounds, one assist and one steal. Fontbonne's Emmie Haring's favorite number was six as the sophomore scored six points while contributing six steals and six assists to go along with her one rebound.
Fontbonne returns to the Dunham Student Activity Center this Saturday, January 3rd for their first home contest of 2015. The Griffins will take on SLIAC opponent Blackburn College at 1:00pm and look to even out their conference record.
