Fontbonne suffers in double overtime loss to MacMurray
Jacksonville, Ill. - A tight race throughout all 50 minutes as Fontbonne and MacMurray went into double overtime last night. Ultimately, the Griffins suffered the 75-70 loss, taking their overall record to 6-7 and SLIAC record to 2-4.
Griffins largest lead was 29-18 with 3:34 to go in the first half. MacMurray stayed in the game, scoring nine unanswered points before Fontbonne scored one last bucket to end the half leading 31-27.
Fontbonen opened second-half play scoring eight straight points to lead 39-27, what would be the largest lead of the game. A few back and forth buckets followed by four Griffin turnovers allowed MacMurray to cut the lead down to six points. MacMurray continued to chip away, tieing the game 57-57 with 1:39 remaining. The Griffins led 58-57 and after a MacMurray timeout, Fontbonne committed a costly foul, sending the Highlanders to the free throw line where they tied the game, sending both teams into overtime.
The Griffins were leading 68-67 when another late foul was committed, this time with six seconds left, giving MacMurray the chance for the win. The Highlanders were only able to secure one free throw, sending the game into double overtime. MacMurray was able to out-score Fontbonne 10-5 to secure the hard-fought battle.
MacMurray's Kadee Carmody scored 22 points with seven rebounds and six assists. The team's largest lead was just five points, which occured during the second overtime.
Fontbonne's Olivia Hollander secured 18 points, her second-highest of the season. She pulled in five rebounds and had one block before fouling out at the end of the first overtime. Chelsy Gibson posted the only double-double of the game with 10 points and 10 rebounds along with three steals. Emmie Haring totaled 10 points, six steals, five rebounds and three assists. Courtney Kedroski scored in double-digits for the second time as a freshman. She also added two assists and two rebounds.
Fontbonne returns to Lee McKinney Court for a Wednesday showdown against Greenville College. The women are set to begin at 6pm.
