Griffins cruise over Gorloks in Battle of Big Bend
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne women's basketball was on the hunt for another win tonight. The Griffins came out strong, forcing three Webster University turnovers in the first two minutes of play and would score the first nine points of the game. Fontbonne ended with the 57-39 win, evening each team's SLIAC record to 5-9. The pair is split on the season against one another and are both looking for a fifth place SLIAC finish for a chance to play in the postseason.
The Griffins got out to an 11-1 lead when the Gorloks started pressing. Six Fontbonne points in a row ensued after a Gorlok three-pointer and the Griffins led 17-4 with 10:44 remaining in the half. Webster returned six unanswered points but Fontbonne pulled away, leading by 12 points with 3:55 before the break. Eight Gorlok points pulled Webster back into the game and the Griffins walked into the locker room with a 27-23 four-point advantage.
Webster scored the first bucket in the second half to pull within two, but wouldn't get any closer. The Griffins scored eight straight points to lead by ten and eventually led by as many as 22 points with 7:09 left to play.
Lauren Willis was on fire tonight for Fontbonne sinking five of eight shots including a three-pointer for a total of 14 points while gathering three steals. Erika Kuhn scored 10 points with eight rebounds as the sophomore went 4-for-6 on the night. Emmie Haring ended the game with seven assists and five steals, four of which came in the first eight minutes of play.
Fontbonne will make the long trip to Iowa Wesleyan College this Saturday, February 14th for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
