Griffins nipped by Westminster in final minute
Fulton, Mo. - Leading by eight at halftime, the Griffins came out slow to start the second-half allowing Westminster to score the first 10 points. The teams were tied 65-65 with 52 seconds remaining when a costly Griffin turnover forced Fontbonne to foul. Fontbonne ultimately lost 70-65.
The Griffins opened the game strong, and with a 9-0 run led 15-6 and eventually a ten-point lead near the end of the first half.
Three of Westminster's first five made field goals were three pointers.After Fontbonne tied the game 46-46, teams fought back and forth for the lead until the 52 second mark.
Chelsy Gibson was big for the Griffins on the boards. The sophomore recorded the game's only double-double with 14 rebounds and 10 points. Olivia Hollander received limited play time. The forward got into foul trouble early and ended with five fouls in 17 minutes of play. Emmie Haring scored the game-high 16 points, sinking six of eight attempts. The sophomore guard was on the floor for all but three minutes and assisted five times with four rebounds, but committed seven turnovers.
Andrea Zalis was the high-scorer for Westminster with 14 points.
The Griffins have only two regular season games left and host their final home game of the season this Saturday, February 21st. Fontbonne takes on MacMurray College at 1 p.m. and will honor lone senior Kristin Dempsey after the game.
