Griffins flatten MacMurray on Senior Day
St. Louis, Mo. - Kristin Dempsey had a great showing today as the senior recorded six rebounds, three blocks, two points and one steal in Fontbonne's 69-49 victory over MacMurray College. Dempsey has 30 blocks on the year so far and 78 in her career. To our current knowledge, she is third on Fontbonne's all-time list of blockers in a single season and second in career blocks.
MacMurray started off with a 6-2 lead but the Griffins scored 14 straight points to go up by ten and never looked back. Fontbonne led 28-15 when six unanswered points gave them a 19-point lead. The Griffins went into the locker room ahead 20 points, leading 38-18. During the second half both teams scored 31 points.
It was a fast-break kind of day for the Griffins who racked up 24 points in fast breaks and 38 points in the paint. Twenty-nine of Fontbonne's 69 points came from their reserves off the bench. Three Griffins scored 14 points and Erika Kuhn led the boards with 10 rebounds. Emmie Haring and Nicole Joerger connected on several baskets today, making the duo a major threat for the Highlanders. Haring continues to add to her single-season assist record as the sophomore aided in nine buckets and scored 14 points during the contest. Haring also totaled four rebounds and four steals but at a price of six turnovers in 35 minutes of play. Joerger had one assist to Haring and two rebounds to go with her 14 points. DeAmbra Pilkinton's 14 points came on 7-of-14 in the field. Fontbonne blanked from long range on nine attempts, an unusual statistic for the Griffins. Fontbonne's opportunities came from their 56-37 rebounding advantage over MacMurray.
After the game, fans were able to honor the lone senior Dempsey in her final home contest of the season.
Fontbonne will play their last game of the 2014-15 season on Tuesday, February 24th in Carlinville, Ill. The Griffins take on Blackburn College at 6 p.m.
