Webster outlasts Griffins 75-70
St. Louis, Mo. – A tight Battle of Big Bend resulted in a Gorlok victory as Fontbonne women's basketball fell to Webster 75-70, despite the Gorloks committing 18 turnovers. Fontbonne falls to 3-8 on the year and 2-3 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
After the first quarter, Webster held a five-point lead. Fontbonne found themselves down 33-25 with 4:56 left in the 2nd quarter. In two minutes, Fontbonne scored nine unanswered points to lead 34-33 and Webster closed out the half with three points. Webster's late first-half troubles brought their turnover totals to ten.
Webster led 47-42 when Hollander closed the gap with two free throws followed by a Haring steal off an inbounds throw who passed to Joerger who nailed the three to tie the game. Joerger connected on back-to-back three's to lead 50-47. Freshman Jessica Jordan dribbled her way through the middle for a layup followed by a Haring three-pointer, for the Griffins' 13th consecutive point. The 55-47 advantage forced Webster to take a timeout. The timeout paid off as the Gorloks tied the game heading into the final frame.
Webster scored five points to start off the fourth quarter, finally broken up by Haring's free throws. The Gorloks led 66-59 when the Griffins cut their lead to three but the Gorloks regained their seven-point lead until Pilkinton dribbled the baseline and assisted Haring's third and final trey.
Webster led 70-67 with 1:44 left when Joerger stole the ball as Webster's shot-clock was about to expire, giving the Griffins an extra offensive opportunity, however Fontbonne was unable to convert. The Griffins maintained possession with 29 seconds to go, but failed on their three-point attempt to tie the game.
Fontbonne recorded 22 points off turnovers and turned the ball over just seven times. Webster's 55.1-41.2 shooting average as well as their 43-24 rebounding advantage lifted them over the Griffins.
Leading the pack was Haring with 19 points and a season-high nine assists. Joerger notched 14 points on the evening while Erika Kuhn and Jordan each tallied 12 points.
Fontbonne travels to Greenville College Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest against the Panthers.
