Women's basketball with last-second OT heartbreaker at Eureka
Eureka, Ill. - Fontbonne sophomore Taylor Ventimiglia gave the Griffins a 65-64 lead with 1:28 to go in overtime. Eureka missed a three-point chance and the Griffins were fouled with 10 seconds left, but missed both free-throws to extend their lead. The Red Devils called a timeout with five seconds left to advance the ball. Eureka senior Emily Camdem went up for the last-second three-point attempt and the Griffins were called for a foul with 0.7 seconds left on the clock. Camdem drained all three free-throws in the Red Devils' 67-65 overtime winning thriller.
The Griffins led 18-16 at the first intermission but trailed 33-23 at halftime. Still down by ten after the opening two minutes of the third quarter, Fontbonne posted six straight points to trail by four. Eureka closed out the quarter with a 45-38 advantage.
Eureka scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to lead 50-38. Not giving up, Fontbonne found themselved down 54-43 before scoring 11 unasnwered points to tie the game with 4:06 to play. The Griffins led 59-57 with 1:21 to go when Eureka tied the game with 1:01 left in the game. Each team missed an opportunity to take the lead before sending the game into overtime.
Erika Kuhn led Fontbonne with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Overall the Griffins out-rebounded Eureka 47-39. Olivia Hollander secured 12 points and seven rebounds in the loss while Emmie Haring notched 11 points and 7 assists. Also contributing on the boards was freshman Kaitlynn Walker with eight rebounds.
Lexi Dooley recorded almost half of Eureka's rebounds, totaling 16 on the afternoon while Camden finished with 25 points.
Fontbonne travels to Tuesday, February 16th for a 6 p.m. contest before returning home to face MacMurray in their final game of the season.
