Ventimiglia leads Griffins off the bench against WashU

St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne University women's basketball suffered a 94-47 loss at neighboring Washington University of St. Louis tonight. The Bears, who are ranked sixth in NCAA Division III in the latest D3hoops.com poll, held Fontbonne to the lowest number of points by an opponent this season. WashU remains undefeated and are now 7-0 while the Griffins fall to 2-5.
After trailing 10-3, Griffins cut WashU's lead to 18-13 after the first quarter. Fontbonne found themselves down by just three points (22-19) after back-to-back treys by seniors Lauren Willis and Emmie Haring respectively. That three-point deficit quickly faded as WashU closed out the second quarter on a 26-0 run to lead 48-19 at halftime.
The Griffins forced the Bears to turn the ball over nine times in the first half. That's the second-most first-half turnovers by the Bears this season. They committed 17 turnovers in tonight's contest, third-highest this year after committing 18 against Hanover and 23 against Illinois Wesleyan.
WashU handled the Griffins in the second and third quarters by out-scoring Fontbonne 59-19. Fourth-quarter play was relatively even as WashU edged Fontbonne 17-15.
Junior Taylor Ventimiglia led all Griffins with 10 fourth-quarter points off the bench going four-for-eight.
For WashU, Zoe Vernon led the game with 14 points followed by Steph Botkin with 13.
Fontbonne will host Blackburn College at 1 p.m. this Saturday, December 10th.
