Second half woes end in Griffin loss at Greenville
Greenville, Ill. - Women's basketball suffers 77-59 loss at Greenville College after being outscored 51-32 in the second half. The loss pulls the Griffins to 4-6 overall and 2-2 in conference. Greenville advances to 3-1 in conference and are now five games over .500 with an 8-3 overall record.
Fontbonne held a 27-26 advantage at halftime but trailed 34-33 with 7:13 left to play in the third quarter. Greenville scored 11 straight points (ending with a trey) before each two netted two treys each to give Greenville a 51-39 lead two minutes before the final break. Sarah Schraut nailed a jumper to cut the Panthers' lead to 10 before the hosts scored eight points in a row to open the lead back up. Greenville would hold onto the 10-plus point lead for the remainder of the contest.
Sophomore Kaitlynn Walker found her stride on the court once again scoring 16 points, draining four trey's on six attempts and pulling down seven rebounds. She finished the game with six buckets on 14 attempts in just 30 minutes on the court. Walker also nabbed three steals.
After having a lights-out game at home earlier this week, senior Emmie Haring secured just one field goal on six attmpts and missed both free throw attempts in tonight's loss. The point guard did add to her career assist totals after dishing out six assists with four rebounds.
Senior Lauren Willis was hot with the ball, scoring 13 points after finishing five of seven attempts and finishing two-for-two at the charity stripe. Also recording double digits in the loss was freshman Raven Venegas with 10 points and six rebounds, connecting on five of nine shots.
Greenville's Taylor Paulin secured the game-high 19 points, nailing five of her six three point attempts. She finished six-for-eight in the game with two free throws and six rebounds.
The Griffins had just nine free throw attempts in the contest, but shot a season-low 55.6% accuracy at the line. While Fontbonne outrebounded Greenville 35-28, the Griffins turned the ball over five more times than the Panthers.
Fontbonne has over a week off before they fly down to Florida for two games over winter break. The Griffins then travel to Eureka College the first Wednesday in January and host RMU-Peoria the first Saturday of the new year.
