Eureka nips women's basketball in final minute
Fontbonne led 57-55 with 1:14 but Eureka
Eureka, Ill. - Fontbonne women's basketball almost upended the Eureka College Red Devils tonight. A back and forth contest for the entire game, the Griffins took a 57-55 advantage with a minute to go after freshman Raven Venegas netted the jumper. The Red Devils would go on to keep their undefeated conference record in-tact with a 61-57 victory. Fontbonne falls to 5-8 on the year and 2-3 in SLIAC play.
After leading 57-55 with 1:14 to play, Eureka buried a jumper to take a two-point lead. The Griffins fouled Lexi Dooley on the shot as she then converted the extra point. Fontbonne would fail to score on their offensive end and a Eureka defensive rebounds forced the Griffins to foul. Eureka secured their fourth conference win with three free points
Venegas scored 14 points for the Griffins while also bringing in the team's high seven rebounds. Senior Emmie Haring recorded eight assists, seven points, six rebounds. Freshman Katie Sportsman also recorded seven rebounds while scoring eight points.
Fontbonne continues to struggle from long range, as the Griffins made just one of 12 attempts. Eureka made six treys while each team scored 26 inside the paint.
The Griffins are at home for their final non-conference game of the year this Saturday at 1 p.m. where they will host Robert Morris University of Peoria.
