Teamwork drives Griffins to victory over Spalding
A trio of Griffins posted double-digit points in their first conference win of 2017 as rebounding was spread around as well with three recording six or more boards.
Louisville, Ky. - Fontbonne women's basketball escaped with a 57-51 victory at Spalding University tonight. The much-needed conference win give the Griffins an even 3-3 record in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while the Golden Eagles slip to 2-4. Overall Fontbonne improves to 7-8 while Spalding is now 7-6 on the year.
Fontbonne trailed 2-4 until 11 unanswered points put them in a 13-6 advantage after the first quarter and a 27-18 halftime lead.
The Griffins struggled in the third quarter, shooting only 25% in the field as they connected on only four buckets on 16 attempts. The Golden Eagles only mustered to gain three points on Fontbonne who led 36-30 after three quarters. An evenly matched 21-21 scoring fourth-quarter kept the Griffins ahead for their second win of the year.
In the fourth quarter, Griffins Kaitlynn Walker and Paige Black each scored eight points while Emmie Haring tallied four assists and four steals. Also recording eight points in the final frame was Spalding's Maya Harding who finished the game with 12 points.
Black, Walker and Haring all recorded double-digits for the Griffins with 15, 13 and 12 points respectively. The trio went seven-of-seven at the free throw line. Haring made her final trip to Louisville and added nine assists, five steals and four rebounds to her totals while making four of six shot attempts including two treys. Walker added six rebounds and four assists. Black made two three-pointers as she finished with the game and career-high in points.
Forwards Raven Venegas and Sarah Schraut led Fontbonne on the rebounding edge with nine and eight respectively, with seven from each coming on the Griffins' defensive end. The Griffins only put eight players out on the court while Spalding rotated 11 in the contest.
Fontbonne will come back to St. Louis to open a three-game home stand, beginning on Saturday, barring any weather delays. The Griffins are set to host Iowa Wesleyan at 1 p.m. on the 14th.
*Senior Lauren Willis did not make the trip due to her student teaching responsibilities. She looks to return to the court on Saturday.
