Iowa Wesleyan haults Griffins' win streak
Kaitlynn Walker scored a team-high 13 points in the Griffins' 48-44 loss at Iowa Wesleyan, snapping their five-game win streak.
Mount Pleasant, Iowa - Fontbonne University women's basketball saw their five-game win streak come to an end tonight as the Griffins fell to Iowa Wesleyan for the second time this year. Fontbonne is now 9-6 in SLIAC play. Saturday's game at Webster (1 p.m.) will decide if the Griffins will be the third or fourth seed in the SLIAC Tournament.
Today's game included dismal shooting by both teams. With Iowa Wesleyan winning 48-44, the Tigers barely shot over 30 percent accuracy while the Griffins 28.6 shot percent.
Fontbonne committed 22 fouls which allowed the Tigers to step to the foul line for 24 free throws. The home squad only sank 15 of them, but enough to give them the win.
Junior Sarah Schraut started the scoring with a jumper 11 seconds into the game. By halftime, the Griffins held a minimal two-point edge over the Tigers. They achieved their largest lead of six points in the third quarter after their first four buckets were all from the three-point range including two from sophomore Kaitlynn Walker. Iowa Wesleyan slowly crawled back and tied the game 40-40 with 3:23 left to play. The Tigers finished the game on an 8-4 run for the win.
Walker led the Griffins with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists. Schraut went four-of-six with nine points and eight rebounds while freshman Raven Venegas brought down seven rebounds in 18 minutes.
Fontbonne concludes the regular season down the road at Webster Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest. They will then play at Eureka in the opening round of the SLIAC Tournament on Thursday, February 23rd, time pending.
