Proffer And Schraut Combine For 37 Points In The Griffins Win Over MacMurray

JACKSONVILLE, Ill.—The Fontbonne University women's basketball team got back to the .500 mark in conference play on Wednesday night, defeating MacMurray, 64-37.
The Griffins (11-12; 7-7 SLIAC), shot 41.4 percent from the floor, out-rebounded the Highlanders 41-34 and its defense forced 23 turnovers. The team also controlled the paint with a 36-16 advantage and dominated with 36 points off its bench, compared to just four for MacMurray.
Mallory Proffer, a Wildwood, Missouri, native, played a key role off the bench with a career-high 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Sarah Schraut, meanwhile, just missed out on a double-double as she tied her season-high with 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
MacMurray (4-19; 2-11 SLIAC), was held to 37 points for the second time in the last three games. The team shot 25.9 percent from the field and were led by Sheyanne Glorfield's team-high 16 points on 6-of-15 shooting. Liz Kruemmelbein was the final player in double-figures, netting 12.
After back-and-forth play early in the first quarter, Proffer earned the old-fashioned 3-point play to give the Griffins a 10-9 lead at 3:09. Later, Rylee Stafford drained her 3-pointer and that put Fontbonne out in front 13-9 after one quarter of play.
In the second stanza, Schraut made her bucket at 7:02 and got fouled on the play. She went on to sink her free throw to extend the advantage to 18-12. The Griffins offense continued rolling from there as Paige Black's bucket made it a 28-16 outing with 1:47 on the clock.
MacMurray went on to net one more free throw, but Fontbonne was well in control at the break, leading 28-17.
After shooting under 38.0 percent in the first two quarters, the Griffins upped its field goal percentage to 43.8 in the third. At 6:29, Schraut put Fontbonne well out in front at 35-19 on her made lay-up.
As the clocked continued to tick away, the Griffins expanded on its lead. Proffer's 3-pointer, with 2:11 on the clock, gave her eight points in the quarter and the visitor's a 43-24 lead. They maintained that double-digit lead the rest of the way and went into the fourth on top, 45-27.
In the finale, the Griffins saved its best field goal percentage for last. They went 7-of-13 (53.8 percent) from the floor and out-rebounded MacMurray 11-5. With Proffer totaling 10 of the teams 19 points in the quarter, the team cruised to the 27-point win.
They'll look for its third straight victory on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day against Iowa Wesleyan. Tip-off at 12 p.m. Prior to the game, the team will honor its seniors Sarah Schraut and Colleen Ahearn.
