ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women's basketball team got back to the .500 mark in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) play after setting a new single game record in free throws made (35) and attempts (43) en route to the 97-81 win over Eureka.
The previous record of most free throws made was 28 which happened four different times, most recently back in 2010. The most free throw attempts, meanwhile, was 39 set back in 2009. Tonight, against the Red Devils was also the first time the Griffins totaled at least 20 points in every quarter.
The Griffins (6-8; 3-3 SLIAC), shot a season-high 55.1 percent from the floor, hit 81.4 percent from the free throw line, and pulled down 41 boards.
Individually, Riley Guffey set a new career-high with 19 points and went a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line. The Newburg, Mo., native, made all 12 of her attempts in the fourth quarter in 1 minute and 13 seconds time to close out regulation.
Rylee Stafford had another strong game with 19 points, while Paige Black and Mallory Proffer tied with 14 points each, which is a new season-high for Proffer. Sarah Schraut registered her third double-double with 12 points and tying her season-high with 11 rebounds.
The Red Devils (5-8; 2-5 SLIAC), shot 40.0 percent from the field and outrebounded Fontbonne 17-5 on the offensive side of the glass. Josie Morgan had herself a night with a game-high 26 points on 9-of-20 shooting.
Ashley Harfst collected a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards and she was joined by Olivia Fall who also earned a double-double of her own with 13 and 10 rebounds.
In the first quarter, the Griffins jumped to a fast 10-1 start just three minute and 33 seconds in on Black's 3-pointer. Five minutes later, the team stretched its advantage out to 19-7 on Stafford's made free throws and were able to maintain its double-digit lead the rest of the way leading by 10 (22-12) after one quarter.
It was a dominant second quarter by Fontbonne. The team shot 80.0 percent (8-of-10) from the floor and outrebounded the Red Devils 11-1.
Samantah Sarnes got the scoring started in the second with a bucket, but over the next two minutes and change the Griffins rattled off a 10-0 run as Raven Venegas' jumper gave them a 32-14 lead. It was all Fontbonne the rest of the way with the Griffins owning a 46-31 advantage at the break.
At the 7:59 mark of the third quarter, the Griffins were on top 55-34 after Stafford capped it off with a 3-point play. The team continued its impressive play as they stretched it out to 22 (67-45) with 2:10 to go on Schraut's made free throws.
The Red Devils added a couple late free throws to make it a 70-52 game going into the fourth. In the fourth, the Griffins took just six attempts from the floor as they went 5-of-6 overall. However, the team pulled away from Eureka at the line going 17-of-20.
Despite EC shooting 52.6 percent from the field in the fourth, the team never got the Griffins lead down to single-digits with Fontbonne going on for the 16-point win.
The team looks for its third straight win at home on Saturday against Iowa Wesleyan in the SLIAC Game of the Week. Tip-off at 1 p.m.
