Gorloks Second Half Surge Proves Too Much For Griffins
ST. LOUIS, Mo.— The Fontbonne University women’s basketball team was down just by three against Webster at halftime, but the Gorloks outscored Fontbonne 48-21 in the second half en route to the 72-42 win.
ST. LOUIS, Mo.— The Fontbonne University women's basketball team was down just by three against Webster at halftime, but the Gorloks outscored Fontbonne 48-21 in the second half en route to the 72-42 win.
Fontbonne (6-10; 3-5 SLIAC), shot a season-low 24.5 percent from the floor. Rylee Stafford led with a team-high 10 points offensively, while Raven Venegas set a new season-high with 13 rebounds, to go along with her six points.
Webster (12-4; 7-2 SLIAC), ended the afternoon with a 37.8 field goal percentage, outrebounded Fontbonne 53-39, including pulling down 23 on the offensive end. They also forced 31 Griffin turnovers.
Individually, Addison Beussink recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 boards. Naomi Johnson was the final player in double-figures with 12.
In the first quarter, the Griffins trailed 8-7 at the 3:39 mark after Guffey drained her 3-pointer. The Gorloks, though closed out the quarter on an 8-2 run to take a 16-9 lead. Fontbonne shot 23.1 percent in the first and were led by Guffey's seven points.
In the second quarter, the Griffins trailed 22-15 on Stafford's layup at 5:15. Webster got a bucket from Hannah Cottrell at 4:50, but Fontbonne finished out the final four minutes on a 6-0 run, capped off by Stafford's jumper to trim the Gorloks lead down to 24-21 at the break.
Both teams shot under 27.0 percent in the half and combined for 28 turnovers. Guffey led all scorers with seven points.
In the third, Raven Venegas banked in her layup to make it 28-25 at 7:32. However, the Gorloks responded with an 8-0 run in less than three minutes to expand its advantage out to 38-25. They went on to outscore Fontbonne 14-8 the rest of the way to own a 19-point (52-33) lead at the break.
In the fourth, Stafford got things going with an old-fashioned 3-pointer in hopes of getting the Griffins going to cut it down to 52-36. The Gorloks, though proved to be too much outscoring Fontbonne 20-9 in the quarter for the 30-point win.
Fontbonne looks for a bounce back win at home on Monday afternoon when they'll take on Iowa Wesleyan. Tip-off at 1 p.m.
