GREENVILLE, Ill.—The Fontbonne University women's basketball team struggled to find an offensive rhythm on Saturday as the Griffins fell 73-49 against Greenville.
The Griffins (9-12; 5-7 SLIAC), shot a season-low 32.7 percent from the floor and were outrebounded 47-23 on the glass. Individually, Raven Venegas registered her fifth straight double-digit game with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Rylee Stafford continued her double-digit streak with 11 points, while Riley Guffey contributed 10 of her own.
The Panthers (16-3; 10-0 SLIAC), ended the afternoon with a 45.0 field goal percentage and they were led by Wesley Woodard's near double-double of 15 points and nine rebounds. Jantzen Michael was the final player in double-figures with 13 points and posted a game-high five steals.
It was a slow start for both teams in the first quarter as a 3-pointer from Guffey tied it up at 4-4 with 4:22 on the clock. The Panthers, though outscored Fontbonne 9-1 over the final four minutes to take a 13-5 lead after one.
In the second, a bucket from Raven Venegas put the Griffins down 23-14 at 4:37. Later, with 55.0 seconds remaining, Stafford made her layup to trim the deficit to 30-23.
Megan Barrett answered with a bucket from Greenville, but Paige Black knocked in her layup prior to the horn sounding to make it a 32-25 game.
In the third, a 3-ponter from Stafford made it a 36-28 outing at 7:50. However, the Panthers went on a 11-0 run over the next three minutes and 45 seconds to stretch its advantage out to 47-28 on Hannah Krukewitt's basket. They held onto that double-digit lead and went into the fourth on top, 56-33.
In the fourth, the Griffins got its offense going again with 16 points in the quarter, but the comeback was not to be with Greenville going on for the 24-point win.
Fontbonne returns to action at home on Wednesday when they'll take on Blackburn. Tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
