Women's Basketball Picked To Finish Sixth In SLIAC Preseason Poll
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) released its 2021-22 Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll and the Griffins were picked to finish sixth.
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) released its 2021-22 Women's Basketball Preseason Poll and the Griffins were picked to finish sixth.
In a shortened 2020-21 season, the Fontbonne University women's basketball team went 4-6 (4-5 SLIAC) under first-year head coach, Mike Fitzgerald.
The Griffins finished the year averaging 62.5 points per game and shot 36.1 percent from the floor. Rylee Stafford, who was named to the SLIAC All-Conference Third Team, led Fontbonne averaging a single-season record 19.9 points per game. She also shot a career-high 93.5 percent from the free throw line.
The Jackson, Mo., native, currently sits with 1,253 career points and needs 376 more to overtake Amy Hauschild (1998-02) to become the all-time leader in program history.
Jillian Venegas, who also was named to the Third Team a season ago, returns after averaging 6.9 points per game and shooting 36.8 percent from the field.
Kourtney White is back for her senior season after putting up 12.2 points per game and shot 50.0 percent from the field in five games. Kya Harbour and Haley Buscher look to build off its 6.9 and 6.8 points per game performances.
Fontbonne welcomes in three newcomers to the roster this year including Ja'mise Bailey, Mackenzie Burke, and Sam Foppe.
After an exhibition against Culver-Stockton, the Griffins get its season underway on November 6th when they'll visit No. 10 ranked Wartburg. Its home opener will be on November 16th against Central (Iowa) at 6 p.m.
