Lady Golfers open up season at Illinois College Invite
St. Louis- The Fontbonne University women's golf team opened up their fall season at the Illinois College Fall Classic this past weekend. The two-day event was played at The Links Golf Course in Jacksonville, Illinois. Fontbonne finished 8th out of 10 teams. Indiana Tech won the team title and Indiana Tech's Wiebke Schlender finished in 1st place among a field of 56 golfers.
Leading the way for the Griffins was freshman Gina Falvey (Cape Coral , Fla./Oasis HS). Falvey was a medalist and finished tied for seventh place with rounds of 83 and 84. Fellow freshman Ellen Lindner (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) placed 33rd with rounds of 90 and 93. Junior Natalie Heck (Galesburg, Ill./Spoon River College) finished right behind Lindner in 34th place firing a 97 on day one and improving her score to an 89 on day two. Sophomore Kaylee Huelsing (Newburgh, Ind./Reitz Memorial HS) finished the weekend in a tie for 43rd place shooting 98,98. Freshman Mary Seise (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) played as an individual and shot rounds of 101 and 108 placing 51st place overall. Freshman Mackenzie Griffin (Osage Beach, Mo./Camdenton HS) tallied a round of 95 in day one but wasn't able to compete on day two. Sophomore Brooke Stockl (Imperial, Mo./Seckman HS) also wasn't able to finish her round on day two but managed to shoot a 102 on day one.
The Griffins women's golf team broke numerous team and individual records over the weekend. Their team score of 364 is the lowest one-day team score ever shot by a Fontbonne women's golf team in a multi-team event. Furthermore, their two-day total of 729 is the lowest two-day total in the history of Fontbonne women's golf in a multi-team event. Freshman Gina Falvey's two day total of 167 broke the individual two-day total record previously held by fellow teammate Kaylee Huesling (182).
Coach Schafer had this to say about his team's performance, "I am extremely proud of our team and their performance this past weekend. We are such a young team and for many, this was their first taste of collegiate golf. The girls are taking our golf program to places it's never been before and it will be exciting to see just how fast we grow and how well we perform week in and week out."
The lady Griffins are back in action this Friday September 6th when they travel to Galesburg, Illinois to participate in the Knox College Invite.
