O'Brien leads Griffins to thrilling victory
The Fontbonne University women's lacrosse team earned their first Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) victory of the season this past weekend defeating Benedictine University in thrilling fashion. The Griffins won 8-7 in overtime to improve to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the MWLC.
Fontbonne junior Tierney O'Brien scored the game-winning goal with 39 seconds left in the first overtime to propel the Griffins to victory. O'Brien scored with 51 seconds to go in regulation to send the game into overtime. For the game, O'Brien led Fontbonne with a season-high five goals.
The Griffins trailed 6-4 with just over 18 minutes to go in the game when freshman Lyndsey Godier scored her second goal of the game to trim Benedictine's lead to 6-5. With just under 12 minutes to go, Benedictine scored on a free-position shot to extend its lead to 7-5. From there on out, O'Brien took over. O'Brien scored just 53 seconds later to reduce to deficit to one goal. O'Brien then tied the game at 7-7 with just under a minute to go on an unassisted goal. Benedictine thought they won the game as they scored a goal as time expired but the referee disallowed the goal because of a charging violation.
Fontbonne recorded just one shot in overtime but O'Brien made it count as she fired home the game-winner in the first three-minute overtime session.
Fontbonne senior Carolann Brenzo made an emergency start in goal for the Griffins recording 12 saves and picking up her first career collegiate victory.
