O'Brien and Blasko lead Griffins to win over IIT
St. Louis- Fontbonne University women's lacrosse overcame a three-goal deficit at the beginning of the second half to win 11-10 in overtime against Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). The win is the Griffins first of the season.
First half goals were exchanged back and forth with IIT leading 5-4 at halftime. For the first time this season, Fontbonne scooped up more groundballs than their opponent, totaling 30 while the Scarlet Hawks accumulated 20.
IIT scored two goals to start the second half, for a 7-4 lead. Tierney O'Brien scored two goals to cut the deficit to one goal, when IIT scored for a two-goal advantage. The Griffins scored the next four goals for a 10-8 lead with 3:50 remaining in the game. IIT scored with 1:04 to go. Fontbonne gained control of the ball, but turned the ball over and allowed Chelseas Badiola to score on a fast break down the field to tie the game with 15 seconds left.
The first three minutes of overtime were scoreless with Fontbonne scoring the game-winning goal halfway through the second overtime period.
O'Brien ended the game with four goals and five groundballs. Sarah Blasko scored two goals, while gaining three draw controls, picking up six groundballs and caused five turnovers. Kelly Mundwiller saved nine for Fontbonne.
Goalkeeper Taylor Thompson saved 14 in cage for IIT.
