ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University men's wrestling team picked up its first dual on the year after defeating Westminster, 27-24.
It was a battle at 125 with Daniel Bauer and Isaac Gawronski needing sudden death after being 9-9 after three periods. However, it was Gawronski coming away with the win in the final minutes.
At 133, the Griffins grabbed a 6-3 lead when Diego McCormick won by forfeit. From there, the Blue Jays won its next two matches by fall taking a 15-6 lead over the Griffins.
Harry Rodriguez got Fontbonne to within six at 15-9 after winning his match by a 3-0 decision over Joey Fallon. At 165, the Griffins tied it up when Joe Beck defeated Jackson Beene by medical forfeit.
Fontbonne picked up 12 more points at 174 and 184 when Connor Morin and Micah Dennis won by forfeit.
Westminster went on to win the next two matches, but its comeback fell short with the Griffins hanging on for the win.
