The Fontbonne University women's soccer team used a dominating second half performance to cruise by Oakland City University yesterday 8-0. The Griffins improved to 2-2 on the season.
Fontbonne outshot Oakland City 14-0 in the first half but was unable to break into the score column until the second half. Fontbonne sophomore Emily Davenport scored her first career collegiate goal in the 46th minute to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead. Senior Kim Carter increased the lead to 2-0 in the 51st minute and junior Erica Kaiping made it 3-0 in the 59th minute.
The Griffins then put the game away by scoring four goals in seven minutes. Junior Kelly Lange scored in the 65th minute followed by Kaiping's second of the game in the 67th minute. Freshman Lindsey Godier scored her first career collegiate goal in the 69th minute and sophomore Allison Weber wrapped up the scoring frenzy in the 72nd minute. Freshman Olivia Henson rounded out the scoring in the 86th minute.
For the game, Kaiping recorded two goals and an assist to lead Fontbonne. Senior Kaniz Abbas and freshman Haley Hopkins combined on the shutout.
The Griffins return to the pitch Wednesday night when they host nationally ranked Washington University at 8 pm.
