The Fontbonne University women's soccer team scored three goals in the final 20 minutes of yesterday's game against Blackburn College to snap their five-game losing streak. The Griffins came back from a 3-1 deficit to beat Blackburn 4-3 and improved to 3-7 overall and 1-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).
While the Griffins maintained most of the possession yesterday, Blackburn made the most of their opportunities. The Beavers recorded just five shots on the day but three ended up in the back of the net.
After Blackburn took a 3-1 lead in the 66th minute, Fontbonne sophomore Ali Weber started the comeback trail by scoring her second goal of the season. Just five minutes later, senior Kim Carter scored her first goal of the game to tie the score at 3-3. In the 82nd minute, junior Kelly Lange blasted a shot off the post and into the net to give the Griffins a 4-3 victory.
For the game, Fontbonne outshot Blackburn 22-5 and held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman Lindsey Godier scored her second goal of the season to open the scoring for the Griffins.
Fontbonne will return to the pitch Tuesday night when they host defending SLIAC champion Principia College at 6:15 pm.
