The Fontbonne University women's soccer team scored two goals in the final seven minutes last night against Westminster College to earn a 2-1 victory and extended their season-high winning streak to four games. The Griffins improved to 7-8 overall and 5-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).The victory clinched a spot in the SLIAC Tournament for the Griffins as their seed is still to be determined.
After dominating much of the game, the Griffins fell behind in the 81st minute on a long range shot by a Westminster midfielder. Fontbonne, which had already hit both goalposts and the crossbar, quickly responded on a goal by junior Kelly Lange in the 82nd minute. Lange's goal was assisted by senior Julia Conroy.
With just under two minutes to go in the game, Fontbonne leading scorer Erica Kaiping scored the game winning goal on a shot that fell into the side netting. The win was Fontbonne's fourth in a row and fifth in the last six games.
For the game, Fontbonne outshot Westminster 21-5 and held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Griffins wore special pink jersey's in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Fontbonne will return to the pitch on Sunday when they host Iowa Wesleyan University at 1 pm.
