St. Louis- Fontbonne University women's soccer pulled off 19 shots on Friday night againt Coe College, but the Griffins couldn't find the back of the net more than once. Fontbonne tied Coe 1-1.
The Griffins came out hot, splitting the Kohawk defense multiple times for long runs out the gate. A quick throw in and pass across the field to sophomore Lyndsey Godier (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) looked like the first goal of the game was in sight. Godier instead crossed the ball in the box to junior Kayla Thorpe (Memphis Tenn./Houston) who nets it passed the Kohawk goalkeeper almost seven minutes into the game.
Fontbonne would have a couple more great looks, but connections failed. A loose ball in the Griffins' defense box would end in a goal by Coe. What looked to be a Griffin defensive save apparently barely crossed the line according to the head referee. Coe had tied the game in the 18th minute.
Griffin fans were held in suspense the rest of the game when multiple opportunities were missed, and Fontbonne gave up some easy saves for the Kohawks. Coe only managed nine shots in the game, four of which were on goal.
Fontbonne returns Sunday morning for an 11am start against Buena Vista at Fenton Soccer Park.
