The Fontbonne University women's soccer team got back to its winning ways as they defeated Spalding University yesterday 2-1. The Griffins improved to 9-5-3 overall and 5-2 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).
After losing their two previous games, Fontbonne got on the board early on Saturday as freshman Kelly Hobbs scored an unassisted goal in the 15th minute. The Griffins continued to press in the first half outshooting Spalding 7-4 but couldnt increase their lead. Fontbonne took the 1-0 advantage into halftime.
In the second half, freshman Savannah Davis increased the Griffins lead to 2-0 by scoring her fourth goal of the season in the 60th minute. Senior Kelly Lange tallied the assist on Davis' goal. Spalding didnt get onto the scoreboard until the 89th minute. Griffin junior Meggin Werner made five saves in goal to pickup the win.
The Griffins will return to the pitch Tuesday night in Greenville, Illinois playing Greenville College at 7 pm.
