St. Louis, Mo. - Today both teams were looking to remain undefeated as Fontbonne women's soccer hosted the Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves.
An uneventful first half, pushed both teams to open the envelope, looking for the game-winning goal. The Griffins thought they had it when near the 80th minute Kaitlin Becherer stole the ball and made a beautiful cross to the left side of the goal for teammate Kayla Thorpe. Thorpe was about five feet in front of the goal near the post and the Prairie Wolf goalkeeper was still on the right side, but Thorpe was inches too far behind the ball.
Fontbonne kept pushing, looking for their chance as they totaled seven corner kicks to Nebraska's one, but goalie Madi Francis stopped most herself as she jumped for the interception.
Kelly Hobbs found the back of the net as she launched one into the upper right corner from 35 yards out, dead center. The goal is Hobbs' third on the season and her second game-winner.
Francis recorded four saves on the afternoon. Fontbonne goalkeeper Tayler Pulvirenti notched two saves. Zero cards were issued.
Fontbonne is back on the pitch, hosting Wisconsin-Platteville tomorrow at 11am and returns September 14 for a 1pm contest against Simpson. The Griffins travel with the men this Wednesday to Illinois College.
